The way to determine what satellite meter is best when installing is based on how many installs you are doing. The higher end satellite meters will get the job quicker and easier. Here are some satellite meters we will base on the number of installations that you are doing and also according to price range. 2) The Acutrac 22 Pro Meter with accessories will give you more bang for the buck as it has many features that the analog finder does not have. The LCD display is much easier to read. Can also switch the 22KHz on and off and includes some nice accessories. Even when doing one installtion, it will get the job done quicker as it is more accurate. If you find that after you complete the installation with this meter and want to make some money doing installtion, it is still a great meter for installers who need just a basic meter is LCD display. First Strike Meters are made for the professional but are easy for the Novice to understand and use. No more searching through complicated menus to find the setting you need to change. When selecting a fta receiver package, you have the option of going with a stationary dish or motorized dish. Here is how to decide what is best for you.

Stationary Systems
If you would like to point at just one satellite, you would need 1 LNB (remember, 1 LNB per satellite). If you want to point at more than 1 satellite and they are WITHIN 35 degrees of each other (97.0, 101.0, 123.0 for example), then you can use a multi LNB holder to hold each LNB together onto the satellite arm.

Motorized Systems
If you would like to view as many satellites as possible, then a motorized free-to-air satellite system works best because the dish is going to move from east to west and point to any satellite you choose. The motor is a piece of hardware that connects on the back of the satellite dish. No external power is needed for the motor as the satellite cable will power the motor. This is the best way to get maximum satellites and channels.

XM and Sirius Merge

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Rivals XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio announced Monday they would enter into a merger of equals, creating a satellite radio giant.

XM (Charts) and Sirius (Charts) said they would each own half of the combined company, which would have a market value of roughly $13 billion, including approximately $1.6 billion in net debt.

As part of the deal, XM Chairman Gary Parsons would remain chairman of the combined firm, while Sirius' Mel Karmazin would assume the role of CEO. XM chief executive Hugh Panero will remain as CEO until the merger is completed.

The two companies, which have a combined 14 million subscribers, said they had not yet determined a new name for the combined company or where its headquarters would be located.
XM shareholders would get 4.6 shares of Sirius stock for each share of XM they own.
"This combination is the next logical step in the evolution of audio entertainment," Mel Karmazin, CEO of SIRIUS Satellite Radio said in a statement.

The deal would also provide listeners a substantially wider variety of programming. Sirius is currently home to shock jock Howard Stern, while XM boasts a number of shows hosted by
high-profile entertainers such as Bob Dylan.

"The combined company will be better positioned to compete effectively with the continually expanding array of entertainment alternatives that consumers have embraced since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) first granted our satellite radio licenses a decade ago," Parsons and Panero said in a joint statement.
Speculation has run rampant on Wall Street about a possible tie-up between XM and Sirius since the beginning of the year.

David Bank, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said he was not surprised by the deal since the merger makes a lot of sense, but he warned the tie-up was not a "slam dunk."
Besides getting shareholder approval, XM and Sirius will also have to get the endorsement of regulators, including the FCC.
Bank added that as a condition of the merger the Department of Justice might impose some sort of price caps so that the combined company can't raise monthly subscription rates by a big amount, if at all.
Right now, both Sirius and XM have tiered-payment subscription packages, which start at $12.95 per month or $142.45 per year.

Says people will laugh at the TV we have today. Here’s what’s in store instead.

Bill Gates' speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2007 hinted at some interesting possibilities that IPTV will offer in the future. He even went so far as to say that in 5 years, people will laugh at the TV we've had up to now. While the majority of TV watchers are not laughing yet, it just might happen eventually. Convergence is likely to be a driving force, as evidenced by the recent announcement at CES about the combined Xbox 360/IPTV console.While the future looks bright with strong market growth, it may be a while before the truly innovative stuff happens and longtime habits change. “I have no doubt TV, as we know it today, will change dramatically, but it’s going to take a lot longer than 5 years for most people to really see a fundamental difference in how they watch TV,” said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband and IPTV at Infonetics Research. “The vast majority of people still receive traditional broadcast TV and still channel surf. Just because Microsoft and many other companies are making it much easier for you to choose video content based on your preferences doesn’t necessarily mean that these same people aren’t going to sit down in front of the TV without any particular preferences at all. IPTV and on-demand video won’t change that channel surfing behavior for some time. But in essence, TV is changing and will continue to change, because the Internet is forcing it to. But we won’t see a massive, dramatic change for another 8-10 years.”
Big Changes AheadWhile this may sound like the same old “rain on the parade” we’ve heard a million times before, the reality is that change is happening, and will happen more going forward, and that media companies must adapt. In his speech, Gates noted the ability to see just the news you want with more personalized ads and interactive educational content. Heynen notes that this is possible today. “Just look at TiVo and their integration of web-based content, as well as strategic ads placed during particular programs in which those particular products appear. Also, take a look at what Google Video is doing by aggregating videos from YouTube and other online video sites and then placing text ads based on the tags people use when uploading their videos.”Custom targeted advertising, such as your neighbor seeing a different version of an ad for the same product, is a key area Heynen sees driving innovation down the road. Yet, as he noted, this raises some much more advanced possibilities, along with ethical issues. “You can then take this to an extreme and start applying it to politics and profiling based on party affiliation, for example. My concern with personalization of news and content is what I call ‘over-personalization.’ Who determines what is important for a community, a nation, a world to see and understand? What is shared news when you have your interests and I have mine? Newspapers served this purpose and, if they are indeed dying, who will do it?” This could be where future innovation hits a crossroads.Convergence is a key area driving future innovation in IPTV, where all types of devices will be combined into one interactive platform. “I think the Xbox announcement is significant because it really shows how converged IPTV can be,” said Heynen. “Because the Internet will ultimately prove as popular a diversion and source of entertainment as TV, we will continue to see more convergence like this. The question is: how do you satisfy each individual family member’s content preferences? IPTV is a way to do it because it makes the delivery of various forms of content -- broadcast TV, VOD, online video, gaming, IM, VoIP -- all share the same transport medium. Once you’ve got the set-top device in place that can intuitively navigate all this content as individual silos, the next step -- and where IPTV holds its greatest potential -- is to mix, match, and combine services on the fly, based on user preferences.”

The Rights Problem

Before that kind of advanced innovation can happen, DRM (digital rights management) issues need to be solved, something Gates noted in his speech. While Microsoft includes a DRM component in its IPTV middleware, Heynen said it’s still a major issue for IPTV operators and content owners. “The content owners are still getting a handle on IPTV as a delivery mechanism and want to ensure that it is just as secure as traditional RF or DTT broadcasting. When content owners see IP, they immediately think Napster, BitTorrent, and millions of dollars in lost revenue due to the unlawful sharing of their content. So, service providers looking to secure content re-transmission deals with content owners have to get over that objection first and then prove they have the DRM tools in place to protect the content.”On other future predictions, Heynen stated, “In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asian-Pacific regions, we will see more hybrid DTV/IPTV deployments than pure IPTV, primarily to get around the DRM issue. Broadcast television will still be delivered over-the-air, with specialty channels and on-demand available via a broadband connection.” So when you unwrap that new Xbox console with IPTV capability, it will be the first step towards true convergence of everything into a single IPTV platform, and that’s where the future really lies.

Ready for your close-up? Some stars fear HDTV's clarity will show every flaw

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Vanity, thy name is hi-def TV.

The holiday shopping season was expected to sharply boost the number of U.S. homes with high-definition televisions to nearly 33 million. In the eyes of a growing number of image-obsessed on-air personalities, that's 33 million clear reasons to be concerned.
Besides spectacular vistas and shockingly real playing fields, hi-def clarity puts any and all wrinkles, pimples and pores on display in well-lit bathroom-mirror detail.
Some TV types say big-screen HDTV could lead to the end of the extreme close-up as we know it. Others predict hi-def fears could soon be reflected in artists' contracts.

Diane Sawyer, the 61-year-old host of ABC's "Good Morning America," acknowledged the changing television landscape when her program began broadcasting in high-definition late last year. Indicating puffiness under her eyes, she told viewers: "They will see it right there."
Dissolve to the TV industry's behind-the-scenes pros, who are developing new ways to help the talent keep up appearances in today's hi-def world.
"The grain structure of film allows a softness that HD video tends not to have, posing more challenges, especially when it comes to capturing female faces," says Stephen McNutt, director of photography for the Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica."
"We seem not to care about seeing men in a rougher, more edgier way," he explains, "whereas females, we're used to seeing them in a softer, more appealing way. So there's a little more filtration needed, and you have to approach it from a different standpoint."
While lighting techniques have been helpful, new advances in cosmetic applications have done wonders, too, says Patricia Murray, "Battlestar's" head of makeup. She uses foundation and makeup that is airbrushed onto the skin, rather than by sponge or fingertip.
"For me, airbrushing is very helpful for high definition when you want an even coverage. However, it's not ideal for every situation," Murray explains.
"We have a show that's very raw, and it's not so glamorous, so the application needs to be a little lighter because we allow the shine of the skin to come through; we don't cover the dark patches under the eyes as much. However, with other shows, you have to watch the amount of shine you allow because high-definition picks that up quite a bit."
Of course, makeup alone won't stave off the HD glare. "Regular facials and a really good skin care is key," Murray says of her advice to cast members. "Drinking lots of water, avoiding coffee and cigarettes, exercise, all those things help the skin's natural glow."
Being show business, Botox injections and facelifts also continue, even though HDTV reveals those tight lines and plumped puckers in extreme clarity.
"Just about everything is more obvious in hi-def," says Sheila McKenna, founder of New York-based Kett Cosmetics, an airbrushed, HDTV-friendly makeup line used by some on "The View," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Today," and all over CNN and ESPN.
McKenna notes that older news and entertainment personalities tend to be more concerned about how they look on HDTV, but younger celebrities don't always look so flattering in the format, either.
Some camera operators believe fears about HDTV exposure could bring an end to extreme close-ups on television shows.
"I think there's a danger area of saying the extreme close-up is not flattering - it's a part of the grammar of television to do that," says Tom Houghton, director of photography for "Rescue Me." The Sony TV-produced show is shot in HD, but appears on FX, which is among a number of cable networks that still airs in standard definition.
"Maybe we don't want to be quite so close, now that people have bigger screens," Houghton adds. "We're evolving from what was once a 12-inch (30-centimetre) screen in black and white in the living room to a huge 57-inch (145-centimetre) home-theatre screen, and that's a big difference in what you're going to see."
"Certainly in the very beginning, no one wanted to work in HD," notes Dan Dugan, producer of the CW network's HD comedies "Girlfriends" and "The Game." "Everybody felt safe with what film has given us, and to go to something new, people are always afraid. But I think you'll find less opposition among the creative community now than five years ago."
Broadcast networks now offer the bulk of their prime-time programming and major sports coverage in HD. Cable provides some HD content, with a few channels that are dedicated to HD.
And a handful of local stations offer their newscasts in hi-def.
With the U.S. Federal Communications Commission mandate that TV networks move from analogue to digital by 2009, talent agent Harry Gold says that concerns over HD may factor into some artists' contracts.
"You take a show like 'Desperate Housewives,' which is in really glossy high-definition. In order for those women to look as glamorous as they want to look, they need to really pay attention to how they're made up and how they're lit, what kinds of lenses are being used and all that kind of stuff," says Gold, president of TalentWorks. "They do have to have some say about how they look onscreen."
Actress Kat Foster of the Fox HD comedy 'Til Death' sees things a bit differently, opting away from the newfangled airbrushed techniques for traditionally applied corrective foundations that, she says, give her a more natural look onscreen.
"It would behoove everyone to see the real celebrity, wrinkles and all," declares the 28-year-old Foster. "I think the more human we are, the more attractive we are to the people who watch us."

Beginning IPTV Subscribers Set for Explosive Growth

The worldwide subscriber base for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services is anticipated to expand by rapidly by 2010, goading a competitive battle between video providers both old and new, according to iSuppli.
The report predicts that global IPTV subscribers will grow to just over 63 million in 2010, with a staggering Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 92.1 percent from 2.4 million in 2005.
The IPTV subscriber base will generate more than $27 billion in overall IPTV services revenue in 2010. While video services will account for the largest portion of these dollars, value-added media services and IPTV operator advertising will combine to represent more than 14 percent of IPTV services revenue in 2010. Furthermore, across all IPTV services, the corresponding content licensing revenue will reach $11 billion in 2010.
iSuppli categorizes market deployment of IPTV services in three phases. The global IPTV market is currently in the first phase, which is basic service deployment. The second phase will see an array of value-added and interactive services being added. Phase three will bring dramatic integration and interactivity improvements.
Thus, in this anticipated battle for subscribers, providing a competitive video offering is merely the cost of entry for IPTV operators. Differentiation of IPTV services will be essential in bringing new capabilities to TV-based entertainment and attracting subscribers.
The areas of differentiation will include:
Interactivity, such as communication, community, voting, interactive advertising and television commerce (t-commerce).
Integration across multiple platforms, across voice and data services and across content types, i.e. video, voice, music, gaming, data services and user content.
Personalization, including intelligent TV recommendations, individualized advertising and non-linear video programming, such as Video on Demand (VoD) and Digital Video Recording (DVR).
Value-added services, including on-demand gaming, music, media applications, home networking management, security and data.
Beyond the video service providers themselves, a range of companies will benefit from the new opportunities arising from their roles as the “arms suppliers” for the battle over the next generation of television distribution. iSuppli predicts that these companies will include infrastructure gear manufacturers, set-top box makers, software vendors and semiconductor suppliers.
Geographically, Europe has taken the early lead in the global IPTV market, both for subscribers and revenue. However, Asia will generate faster growth than other regions and will achieve the largest subscriber base by the end of this year. The Americas will lead the world in terms of IPTV dollars starting this year as it will yield the highest Average Revenue Per User (ARPU).
Mark Kirstein, vice president, multimedia content and services for iSuppli stated: “The fight to capture the expanding base of IPTV subscribers will put telecom operators on a collision course with existing pay-TV market competitors and with a new class of broadband video portals as they roll-out progressively more sophisticated offerings.”

The Fight Between Cable and IPTV Heats Up

SAN ANTONIO — The city that is home to the Alamo, site of the battle that eventually gave us the state of Texas, may soon play host to another historic fight between traditional cable and Internet Protocol TV. AT&T selected the city to fire the opening salvo in its IPTV campaign after recently launching its U-verse service there.

AT&T, which is betting big with U-verse, hopes the new product will revolutionize the way Americans connect to the world outside their homes. U-verse offers TV, data and (eventually) phone in one high-speed broadband connection. Users can view multiple channels at once, instantaneously retrieve information about the programs they are watching and — eventually — access some Internet content through their TV’s.

"We're on the ground floor of something that's going to revolutionize the industry," AT&T installation man Jesse Vallado said. "We have the whole world looking at us."
Vallado, who spent 20 years working for a local cable company, was interviewed for a New York Times feature article on the looming battle between cable and IPTV.

While the technology needed to build an IPTV infrastructure dictates the user experience, whether the service succeeds or fails will come down to attracting users.

To ramp up its subscription base, AT&T has offered deep discounts on its IPTV service. The company’s middle-tier plan comes with 170 TV channel, 31 premium movie channels and 17 music channels, a 3-megabit broadband connection, three setup boxes, a digital video recorder and a WiFi router for $94 per month.

Attracting the first 10 percent of the market to switch to IPTV should be relatively easy because there will always be a segment of people eager to change for the promise of lower prices, Sanford Bernstein telecommunications analyst Jeffrey Halpern said. Picking up the next 10 percent will be the real challenge because most cable and satellite users are either happy with their service or unwilling to go to the trouble of changing, according to Halpern.

Grabbing market share will be a vital issue for both AT&T and Verizon as they seek to recoup capital expenditures needed to overhaul their networks. Verizon spent $18 billion to bring fiber all the way to consumers’ homes; AT&T took a cheaper route, taking fiber only to local neighborhoods and using existing copper cable to go the rest of the way.

While AT&T is not the only phone company to experiment with IPTV, it has made the largest gamble. By the end of 2008, the company expects to have IPTV service available to half of the 38 million homes it provides local phone service to. AT&T predicts that a successful subscription rate will be 30 percent of that market, bringing IPTV to 5.7 million customers in 13 states.

In the meantime, cable companies such as Time Warner, which serves half the homes in San Antonio, have been fighting back, offering subscribers discounted rates and increased content to keep them from jumping ship.
